LOOK A POST
It is confession time! I have not been posting in LJ much recently, mostly because Twitter and Google Reader have been sort of absorbing all of my random and not-so-random thoughts. Why post an LJ entry when you can just make CRAZY CHAIN TWEETS into the ether or HILARIOUSLY TOO LONG GOOGLE READER COMMETS on relevant articles?

Of course, I am trying to work myself out of this or at least look into compiling and crossposting and expanding on these TWEETS and GREADER COMMENTS.

But that is not actually my confession.

In the course of this not-posting I have not been keeping the ol' flist abreast of my tv show dealings.

Namely, that a frankly BIZARRE dark horse contender has come out of nowhere this television to be New Thing I Like Best.

I only set my DVR for it on a WHIM all of two days before it premiered because the random commercial I saw featured "Help I'm Alive" and it starred Mia from Degrassi (aka Nina Dobrev) and Ian Somerhalder. I was still in denial about my affection for it even when I exiled Bones to the DVR in the rec room after ONE EPISODE so that I could keep watching it in my room.

But now, five episodes in when shit is already getting so real...yes, you guys, I am forced to admit:

I sort of love The Vampire Diaries.

WHAT IS THIS MADNESS? I DO NOT KNOW.

It was just supposed to be some lulzy CW cash-in on Twilol and yet somehow it sort of immediately proved itself to be THE ANTI-TWILOL!?!

I don't care about vampires at all, but I do care about YA fiction and gender dynamics in the romantic relationships therein and especially about sociopath/good girl! And in TVD, there are girls! Girls with agency and personalities and opinions! And it COMMITS to sociopath good girl! Ian Somerhalder, Bad Boy Vampire Foil, wanders around being a giant creeper and twirling his moustache magnificently and you are not actually supposed to think OMG HE IZ TEH PERFECT ROMANTIC HERO~! And the Noble, Tormented Vampire is not actually a grossly controlling, paternalistic jerkface! He is a historical fact-quoting doof who sort of sucks at vampirism but is pretty okay with that! STEFAN JUST WANTS HIS BROTHER TO BE A LITTLE LESS GAY FOR HIM AND LEAVE HIM TO DOOF AROUND IN PEACE OKAY?

Did I mention ladies? Elena! Oh Elena who I loved first. Who is 1000% NOT Bella Swan. And who, in fact, if she knew Bella would probably immediately give her a firm, but compassionate talking-to about GETTING HELP. And sweet, pretty Bonnie discovering her power and her grandma WHITLEY GILBERT OMG. And Caroline. Oh Caroline. ;_; And even rad Aunt Jenna who is, well, rad when she is about. And sure I probably pay the least attention to Vicki's storyline as it tends to involve an army of indistinguishable douchey guys, but we might actually be getting somewhere with that too!

So, yeah. I am sure my new Show I Care About was supposed to be something else entirely, but the heart wants what it wants. And my heart wants to love the deliciously cheese-encrusted and oh-so-enjoyable Anti-Twilol. Not least because of that one time it explicitly made fun of actual Twilol. CLASSIC!

And now, behind the cut, I will talk about this week's episode.

SHIT GOT REEEEAL OMG.

One of the first things [info]sainfoin_fields said to me after she saw it was that it was totally season two Buffycore. And it totally WAS.

Some things:

1) I got super excited at the sudden appearance of MYTHARC in Family Ties because wheeee secret council of town elders or whateverface who know about vampires. I find Caroline's mom the most interesting of these, so I'm glad to see her being one of the main ones in this episode, though I hope no harm befalls her in her VAMPIRE HUNT. I am really, really curious about what all the various ITEMS they want do AND what that gem/necklace thing Damon stole is all about. Particularly since I am pretty sure he did not actually intend for Caroline to have/keep it.

2) Can I describe to you how much I love Stefan calmly locking Damon in the basement and fully intending to let him MUMMIFY and being all "We'll re-evaluate in 50 years?" I think I can. Description: I LOVED IT A LOT. Even though Stefan enjoys spending his time doofing around in high school and playing football and whatnot I like that he is still a however many decades (centuries?) old vampire and when it comes time to get shit done, he will in fact do his best to Get Shit Done.

3) Elena's dogged persistence in figuring out what the hell is up with Stefan was also ACE. The fact that she scolded him last week for needing to EARN trust is actually followed up on! She's smart enough to know that there is CLEARLY something up with him and it could OBVIOUSLY be dangerous and so she needs to FIND OUT and DEAL WITH IT regardless of how much she likes him and how cute he is and how many stories he tells her about liking Miley Cyrus songs! Have I mentioned that I love Elena? (I do.)

4) Super super curious about what's going to go down with Bonnie's witchery and GRAMMA JASMINE GUY. She was the first to ping to something being up with Stefan, so I would love to see what, if anything, Elena tells her or if she figures it out herself and also what her grandmother may or may not know about the secret town elders or whatever.

5) Uh...I sort of hope Damon turns Vicki into a vampire. THEN I MIGHT ACTUALLY BE ABLE TO PAY ATTENTION TO HER STORYLINE. I am sorry Jeremy, but you are boring! Your obsession with "rescuing" Vicki from Indistinguishable Douche #6 was boring. Your insistence on being a drug dealer/addict whatever due to your emo pain is boring (<333 Vicki sort of calling him on that, at least). Your fixation on whether Vicki WUBS you is also boring. Omg...just BE LESS BORING.

6) Poor dead uncle/nephew uh..Name I Don't Remember. The old neck snap gets them every time. Perhaps you should not have told Damon that you had vervane in your system. Then he would have tried to suck your blood and been POISONED. Not enough forward thinking there, buddy! Maybe next ti- oh right.

I am embarrassingly excited about next week.

I have not visited the fandom even once yet, but I must inevitably because I have reached the point wherein I need icons.

VAMPIRE VICKI WOULD BE 1000% UPGRADE OVER ANGSTY WAITRESS HAS A HAREM OF DOUCHES VICKI.

Basically I endorse this post so very much. AND OMG CAROLINE. I am worried for herrrr. (Maybe the pendant's star shadow will protect her?!)

SUCH AN UPGRADE. AT THIS POINT I AM GOING TO BE MASSIVELY DISAPPOINTED IF THIS UPGRADE DOES NOT TAKE PLACE.

Omg I know. I was like freaking out about so much other stuff the first time I watched it, but during my rewatch just now I became SUPER WORRIED for Caroline. CAROLIIIINE. I agree with the hope that STAR SHADOW PENDANT PROTECTS HER OR SOMETHING. Or maybe Stefan can give her some more vervane or something IDK.

It was just supposed to be some lulzy CW cash-in on Twilol and yet somehow it sort of immediately proved itself to be THE ANTI-TWILOL!?!

This would probably be because LJ Smith is fucking awesome. I used to love reading her stuff in high school. The Vampire Diaries are one of the few book series by her I haven't read--mostly because they never seemed to have the first book at the library--but I figure it's probably as good as the rest of her stuff. (By the way, if you get a chance to read The Forgotten Game trilogy or Night of the Solstice, do it.)

ETA: Also, TVD and Smith's other books pre-date Twilol by about ten years, which probably helps. Is it just me, or were YA book heroines a hell of a lot more stronger back in the nineties?

I have never read any of her books, but I obviously have a new interest in TVD! And yes, hahaha I forgot to mention in the post the fact that TVD predates Twilol. Taking that into account, I consider the fact that this TV show is clearly getting made now because of Twilol while mocking it and being the anti-it to be a SWEET KIND OF JUSTICE.

Also, I have to agree that in my youthful reading I never came across a heroine as completely, entirely, studiously without agency as Bella Swann. So, no, it's not just you at all. In fact, I always felt that a lot of the awesomest girls I got to read about were when I was reading "age-appropriate" stuff and it was when I was reading "adult" novels there was always all kinds of fucked up shit going on. And I have to say: I much prefer it that way to distressingly bad heroines like Bella being presented to young girls. At least when you're older you have a better chance of recognizing the crazy stuff.

The extent to which I DON'T HATE THIS SHOW shocks and delights me every week. Basically I love all the girls, especially Elena (the Anti-Bella) and Bonnie (could not actually love her more), though who knows where they're going with Vicki and whether there are any other people in all of Virginia for Stefan to bite, good lord please turn her or something. And Caroline and her mother this week. ;___;

YES EXACTLY.

I kept being completely confused by how much I do not hate it until I had to accept that I actually like it!

And also total agreement with everything else you say, particularly love of all the ladies. Also hahaha yeah Vicki gets it EVERY TIME. What?! This is another pattern I would like to be remedied by her being turned into a vampire. That would be RAD.

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES! OH MAN I AGREE WITH YOUR COMMENTS SO MUCH.

1) CAROLINE'S MOM! CAROLINE'S DAAAAAAAD. OH MAN. I love that whole dynamic. And I can't wait to find out more about the gem. And I'm really really hoping that some of the sociopath/good girl keeps lingering and isn't halted by Damon's apparent I'M DONE WITH YOU! feelings. NO NO, DON'T BE DONE YET. WE HAVE SO MANY MORE SOCIOPATH/GOOD GIRL SCENES TO SEE. ugh this show DOES THEM SOOOO WELL. I loved her a lot at the door going " i have no ideas what my actual memory is - did I like it or not?" etc. EEE.

2) STEFAN. You are so accurate about how he's just this dishy doof without being a creeper. Liiiiike even Angel was a bit of a creeper with Buffy; but Stefan is just madly crushing on this girl who looks like his old dead gf, who is hobvs a million times better than Katherine, and he's too much of a doof to realize that telling her straight up about LOLS! VAMPIRE! HI! would be okay. SHE CAN TAKE IT. As long as you definitely have an alibi the night of her parent's death!

3) I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE EEEEEEEET. Like. Okay. Ever since Sookie completely failed at wiki'ing vampires in True Blood and missed out on some CRUCIALLY IMPORTANT TRUE BLOOD VAMPIRES LORE and fucked herself with not knowing that info ahead of time, I have been obsessed with the fact that Bella, Beth in Moonlight, and now Elena are researching the crap out of vampires online so that they have the information, and it's their self agency that commits them to FINDING THIS SHIT OUT. So, while being peeved that a news station would have easy-to-access footage from the 1950s or whatever (handwave!), I WAS SO DELIGHTED WITH ELENA'S "SCHOOL PROJECT"~

hahah i lol'd at the milely cyrus joke. ngl.

4) BONNIE! I love her potential, I don't quite love everything about her yet. But I KNOW she's going to be great as she really falls headfirst into her witchy ident. AND I LOVE THE GRAMMA. MORE MORE MORE SHOW MORE.

5) I am hoping we never see Vicki again. Or Jeremy. Can both of them just disappear? (I fast fwd through all Jeremy scenes. I KNOW.) But I could see vampire!Vicki as being a delightful turn of events. I'D LIKE IT IF IT HAPPENED.

6) I AM SO SAD ABOUT POOR DEAD UNCLE. THAT WAS NOT NICE. Also, I'm dying to find out the family tree connection. UGH. WHY DID THE SHOW KILL HIM.

anyway. it's an amazing show.

1) I feel like (HOPE) that Damon is not totally done with Caroline because at the VERY LEAST she still has the crazy necklace whatever it is! AND! He still has no ring so he might want an OPERATIVE who can actually be out during the daytime. THIS IS WHAT I AM CONVINCING MYSELF.

2) STEFAN! He is just such a breath of fresh air to me what with the NOT BEING TOTALLY CREEPY AT ALL TIMES. I had forgotten how that felt?!?! Particularly in vampire stories what. Or has that ever even happened in vampire stories before?! Regardless, Stefan dishy doof with a crush who is bad at lying and doesn't like doing it anyway and just needs to fess up. ILU, SIR.

5) I am completely and totally wedded to vampire!Vicki now to the extent that if we do not get it I will feel compelled to write about it IDEK. I JUST WANT IT TO HAPPEN.

6) The family tree thing is SUCH A MYSTERY TO ALL?! I've seen people who read the books who are like UH HE DID NOT EXIST SO IDEK. Maybe there will be an explanation since it seems like there will perhaps be some flashbacks idk.

I read the books back when they first came out, and loved them (especially Damon), but when the show was previewing, it looked like such a Twlight promo I was pretty sure I wasn't going to like it.

Still, I had to check it out.

I love it sooooooooooooooooooooooo much! It is definitely the anti-Twilight. Elena's statement this week, about not being one of "those pathetic girls whose world stops spinning because of some guy" was totally a Bella-slam. I stopped reading New Moon back when I tried to read those books precisely because Bella spends half the book suicidally depressed because Edward leaves her "for her own good".

Dude, Elena? Would be pissed! I love Elena, and I really expected not to.

I also love that they don't shy away from Damon being a bad guy. He's got all this depth to him (moments of humanity he's determined to hide and/or wipe out, ala killing Mr. Tanner), but he is also broken and sociopathic, and they actually show us that! But with those other, deeper moments, too, like his absolute shock and not knowing how to deal when Elena tells him "I'm sorry. You loved Katherine, too."

I could go on about Damon pretty much forever. :)

It might interest you to know that Damon/Bonnie is practically canon in the books (the later books, like book 4). I do say "practically" but it's not like the possibility is subtle. Oh, and if you do read the books, don't be put off because Elena is a blond Queen Bee of the school (at first), and Bonnie is a sort of shy redhead, descended from Scottish Druids. The show took some liberties, and really, that's great! Bonnie in the books was never so cool she got to start fires! She just had psychic gifts.

Also, they've sort of made two book characters into one in Caroline, near as I can see, and that's fine, too. I really like what they've done with show-Caroline. She reminds me of Cordelia on Angel. I think he getting that necklace is going to save her life. I don't think Damon's going to be able to easily get it back.

I hope they do something more with Vicki - turning her might be pretty cool. Hmmm. Will Damon care for his new fledgling, or will Stefan have to pick up the pieces? I'm guessing the latter.

I'm so glad you like this show! The more people on my f-list, the better. Then I won't have to go out into fandom to find good fic and things. :D

Also what you say about the books THIS EXPLAINS THESE DAMON/BONNIE ICONS I saw earlier and went LOL WHUT?! to. Hahaha. Good to know!

And yes I enjoy seeing the excitement on my flist as well. When I went into the actual fandom looking for icons I wasn't uh...haha super impressed there. DO NOT REALLY WANT TO GO BACK TO DELVE INTO THAT BUSINESS.

You recommend it then?
I was interested when I saw the preview because it seemed like the protag actually had, y'know, friends and such, who she didn't ignore. And I thought that since the only way I can like Twilight is if I imagine that Bella actually cares about people who are not vampires, I might actually like it.
But I have had my hopes crushed one too many times.

But I think you have convinced me to at least give it a try! (Plus all of the people talking about it in your comments, hahaa.)

I saw you at affectingly's friending meme.

I basically agree with everything you've said here. Even if I'm sometimes iffy about Elena I love that she's basically the anti-Bella. I love Damon and the fact that he's creepy and no one pretends otherwise, even when there are moments when there is something more going on with him than sadistic hedonism. Stefan is a lot more interesting on the show than he was in the books. I actually kind of love him now.

L.J. Smith is pretty good with female characters especially in comparison to most young adult fiction. Her Secret Circle series there is a plethora of strong female characters.

Hee. I am embarrassed by how much I enjoy this show. And here I was all ... what? another vampire thingy? Snore. And then I started watching it because I heard that it made fun of Twilight at one point. And it was kind of incredible what with the dodging of the cliches - the adults know what's going on! Yes! Elena doesn't suck and in fact is kind of awesome. Bonnie rocks! Even Caroline is adorably ditsy. Vicki is the only one that really annoys me, but hey, vampirized now so that's got to improve things.

In short, why have I never gotten around to friending you? Given all our interest overlap and stuff.

I freely admit I have questionable taste in TV (my main fandom is Smallville) but I'm really enjoying The Vampire Diaries and I'm glad to see others are as well, and for similar reasons.
