LOOK A POST
It is confession time! I have not been posting in LJ much recently, mostly because Twitter and Google Reader have been sort of absorbing all of my random and not-so-random thoughts. Why post an LJ entry when you can just make CRAZY CHAIN TWEETS into the ether or HILARIOUSLY TOO LONG GOOGLE READER COMMETS on relevant articles?
Of course, I am trying to work myself out of this or at least look into compiling and crossposting and expanding on these TWEETS and GREADER COMMENTS.
But that is not actually my confession.
In the course of this not-posting I have not been keeping the ol' flist abreast of my tv show dealings.
Namely, that a frankly BIZARRE dark horse contender has come out of nowhere this television to be New Thing I Like Best.
I only set my DVR for it on a WHIM all of two days before it premiered because the random commercial I saw featured "Help I'm Alive" and it starred Mia from Degrassi (aka Nina Dobrev) and Ian Somerhalder. I was still in denial about my affection for it even when I exiled Bones to the DVR in the rec room after ONE EPISODE so that I could keep watching it in my room.
But now, five episodes in when shit is already getting so real...yes, you guys, I am forced to admit:
I sort of love The Vampire Diaries.
WHAT IS THIS MADNESS? I DO NOT KNOW.
It was just supposed to be some lulzy CW cash-in on Twilol and yet somehow it sort of immediately proved itself to be THE ANTI-TWILOL!?!
I don't care about vampires at all, but I do care about YA fiction and gender dynamics in the romantic relationships therein and especially about sociopath/good girl! And in TVD, there are girls! Girls with agency and personalities and opinions! And it COMMITS to sociopath good girl! Ian Somerhalder, Bad Boy Vampire Foil, wanders around being a giant creeper and twirling his moustache magnificently and you are not actually supposed to think OMG HE IZ TEH PERFECT ROMANTIC HERO~! And the Noble, Tormented Vampire is not actually a grossly controlling, paternalistic jerkface! He is a historical fact-quoting doof who sort of sucks at vampirism but is pretty okay with that! STEFAN JUST WANTS HIS BROTHER TO BE A LITTLE LESS GAY FOR HIM AND LEAVE HIM TO DOOF AROUND IN PEACE OKAY?
Did I mention ladies? Elena! Oh Elena who I loved first. Who is 1000% NOT Bella Swan. And who, in fact, if she knew Bella would probably immediately give her a firm, but compassionate talking-to about GETTING HELP. And sweet, pretty Bonnie discovering her power and her grandma WHITLEY GILBERT OMG. And Caroline. Oh Caroline. ;_; And even rad Aunt Jenna who is, well, rad when she is about. And sure I probably pay the least attention to Vicki's storyline as it tends to involve an army of indistinguishable douchey guys, but we might actually be getting somewhere with that too!
So, yeah. I am sure my new Show I Care About was supposed to be something else entirely, but the heart wants what it wants. And my heart wants to love the deliciously cheese-encrusted and oh-so-enjoyable Anti-Twilol. Not least because of that one time it explicitly made fun of actual Twilol. CLASSIC!
And now, behind the cut, I will talk about this week's episode.
SHIT GOT REEEEAL OMG.
One of the first things
sainfoin_fields said to me after she saw it was that it was totally season two Buffycore. And it totally WAS.
Some things:
1) I got super excited at the sudden appearance of MYTHARC in Family Ties because wheeee secret council of town elders or whateverface who know about vampires. I find Caroline's mom the most interesting of these, so I'm glad to see her being one of the main ones in this episode, though I hope no harm befalls her in her VAMPIRE HUNT. I am really, really curious about what all the various ITEMS they want do AND what that gem/necklace thing Damon stole is all about. Particularly since I am pretty sure he did not actually intend for Caroline to have/keep it.
2) Can I describe to you how much I love Stefan calmly locking Damon in the basement and fully intending to let him MUMMIFY and being all "We'll re-evaluate in 50 years?" I think I can. Description: I LOVED IT A LOT. Even though Stefan enjoys spending his time doofing around in high school and playing football and whatnot I like that he is still a however many decades (centuries?) old vampire and when it comes time to get shit done, he will in fact do his best to Get Shit Done.
3) Elena's dogged persistence in figuring out what the hell is up with Stefan was also ACE. The fact that she scolded him last week for needing to EARN trust is actually followed up on! She's smart enough to know that there is CLEARLY something up with him and it could OBVIOUSLY be dangerous and so she needs to FIND OUT and DEAL WITH IT regardless of how much she likes him and how cute he is and how many stories he tells her about liking Miley Cyrus songs! Have I mentioned that I love Elena? (I do.)
4) Super super curious about what's going to go down with Bonnie's witchery and GRAMMA JASMINE GUY. She was the first to ping to something being up with Stefan, so I would love to see what, if anything, Elena tells her or if she figures it out herself and also what her grandmother may or may not know about the secret town elders or whatever.
5) Uh...I sort of hope Damon turns Vicki into a vampire. THEN I MIGHT ACTUALLY BE ABLE TO PAY ATTENTION TO HER STORYLINE. I am sorry Jeremy, but you are boring! Your obsession with "rescuing" Vicki from Indistinguishable Douche #6 was boring. Your insistence on being a drug dealer/addict whatever due to your emo pain is boring (<333 Vicki sort of calling him on that, at least). Your fixation on whether Vicki WUBS you is also boring. Omg...just BE LESS BORING.
6) Poor dead uncle/nephew uh..Name I Don't Remember. The old neck snap gets them every time. Perhaps you should not have told Damon that you had vervane in your system. Then he would have tried to suck your blood and been POISONED. Not enough forward thinking there, buddy! Maybe next ti- oh right.
I am embarrassingly excited about next week.
I have not visited the fandom even once yet, but I must inevitably because I have reached the point wherein I need icons.
